The Inspiration
Megan Wright-Jones has always loved musicals. One of her favorites Rent, features a song called “No Day Like Today” — and she says that song has become an anthem for her life.
Embracing the song’s message that “There’s only now, there’s only here,” Wright-Jones surmounted her own intimidation and reservations to launch Professional Youth Theatre Company of Michigan, an Ypsi-based theater troop for middle schoolers and high schoolers.
Wright-Jones’ approach to theater is all about empowerment. Whether they’re doing a production of Grease or Matilda the Musical, Wright-Jones focuses on giving participants the creative freedom to really take ownership of a production.
And what does she say to kids who are thinking about theater but scared of performing on stage?
“Just do it, If you’re scared, just try it, and it gets easier. And if you’re there with an ensemble of community members, it’s easier to get over that fear.”
Looking Forward
Wright-Jones says she’s particularly inspired to work with kids in the Ypsi area because of what they uniquely bring to the table.
“The kids in Ypsilanti are artistic and awesome, and they have this creative energy,” she said. “These kids are real, and they want to be here doing creative things. I’m happy to create a space for them to do that.”
Wright-Jones said her longer-term vision is to continue offering a space where young people can find their confidence and develop a lasting passion — and to affirm the importance of facing your fears.
“Our mission is to meet kids where they are,” Wright-Jones said. “This has become a community, and we’re integrating into Ypsilanti as much as we can.”
