The Inspiration
Growing up, Rachel Blistein disliked her curly hair and spent time trying to make it look straight. But as she learned more about maintaining her curls, she grew to love her own hair — and wanted to help others do the same.
The result was a venture that began in Blistein’s kitchen in 2009, where she started formulating her own hair care products. Her mission was to use eco-friendly, non-toxic and cruelty-free ingredients that would leave curly and natural hair truly nourished, and able to look its best.
Soon, Blistein’s kitchen experiment took off, and the resulting business, Original Moxie Salon, became a combined salon and haircare product lab that’s built brand recognition and affinity well beyond the Ypsi area.
Looking Forward
Blistein said that while the mission and impact of Original Moxie have expanded over the years, the core vision of the business remains the same: “To provide a space where people feel comfortable being themselves and can see themselves as beautiful.”
Blistein added that Original Moxie is right at home in Ypsilanti, since in her words, “Ypsi has so much history and so many different personalities and cultures, all blended together here. I love being part of that.”
